Rainbow falls is named for the rainbows that are visible in the morning mist of the water fall. It’s a gorgeous 80 foot waterfall. The fall flows over a natural lava cave into a pool of turquoise waters. Around the pool the lush vegetation is bordered by beautiful, albeit not native, ginger plants.
If you go up the river you come to another smaller waterfall called Pe’epe’e Falls (pronounced Peh-EH Peh-EH). PeePee Falls is also known for the Boiling Pots which is the description of how the water looks in the pools. Both are easy access and beautiful viewing, right in Hilo area.
The Hawaiian name for Rainbow falls is Waiānuenue which means “rainbow water.” If you want to go at the optimal time to see the morning rainbows on the waterfall try around 10 am.
Bathroom facilities are available.
