The Volcano Village area is a world unto itself. It’s a misty, mysterious wonderland and is literally on top of the volcano. There are no chain stores and very few city amenities. Supposedly there is one gas station and this is important. Gas stations aren’t exactly easy to put on top of a volcano. But there is some housing if you choose to stay here.
Volcano House Hotel
The Volcano House is not located in Volcano Village but nearby on the rim of Kilauea Caldera. It has recently been renovated and has a storied history since 1846, a full 170 years ago. The draw of this place is that you literally wake up to dramatic views of the Caldera as you are right on the rim. How often can you say that you spent the night on a volcano?
The Caldera itself was crusted over for many years but in the last decade a hole blew out in a section on the far side of the caldera. It has special viewing at night. This is something afforded to you when you stay in the hotel. There are also 10 renovated cabins in the Namakanipaio Campground.
Kilauea Lodge, a four-star lodge that is highly rated offers 12 beautiful rooms near Volcano National Park. Several of the rooms not only offer balconies but in-room fireplaces. Additionally guests can enjoy an outdoor hot tub special for their guests. It has a special history on the island as in in the 1930’s it was used as a place to house children who were exploring the volcano. It has since been renovated in the 1980’s to welcome visitors from around the world in classy accomodations.
Vacation rentals are really a special way to go. You often get the whole home to yourself that is completely furnished and doesn’t have the feel of a hotel stay. There are several in the volcano area but here are some recommended places to stay in Volcano Village.
